[SLICE] Here's an Idea: The Random Holiday Release

We’re going to play around with a new theme called “Here’s an idea…” -- you know, the phrase someone says when you’re completely out of ideas and are willing to try anything? Yep, we’re going to run with that! We’re just going to toss you a few ideas when we come up with them. Try them if you like, pass if it doesn’t seem right for you!

So - Here’s an idea: The Random Holiday Release!

In honor of today’s festive date, we thought it’d be cool to bring this one to light. Burn it up, if you want. We’re chill either way. (ok, sorry). ANYWAY. So the basic idea is to take a random holiday and build a fun release around it. Maybe it ties into a full album or maybe it’s a standalone track… but odds are, it might get you a few more ears than you’re used to getting if you play it right. Here’s how to do it:

Make the song relevant to the holiday

Last year on this day of all days, we released Ron’s song “Let’s Get Stoned” which was off of his upcoming album “Work.” On Valentine’s day, our bud Michaela Anne released a cover of “Your Cheatin’ Heart.” It doesn’t matter if the idea is a bit kitschy. People love kitsch!

Call attention to the holiday in your press release

Since we built a single specifically around 4/20, “Lets Get Stoned” got picked up on all sorts of cannabis-type blogs and radio shows that would have NEVER featured Ron for any other song. Remember that you’re likely one of only a few artists releasing something specifically around the day! Play it up.

Hashtag your face off

#InternationalDogDay? #InternationalBagleDay?? Those are all things! Those are all things that do VERY WELL on social media. Be a part of it.

Use big album anniversaries

Does your favorite band have a major album anniversary coming up? USE IT! The 40th anniversary of Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" was last year and it kills me that we didn't put out some sort of rad cover to celebrate it. We're dumb. Don't be dumb like us!

Stay away from the big guys

Christmas? Taken. 4th of July? Likely out of your league. New Years? NOPE. However…

Try to make sure the holiday isn’t TOO outlandish

Apparently May 8 is “No Socks Day” according to this very professional website, but maybe that’s not a day to capitalize on. Or maybe it is - it’s your thing!

Have fun with it

Yeah, you want to get more eyes and ears on whatever you’re doing, but keep in mind that this could just be something fun and a little extra for your brand. Make it fun for your fans and it’ll be fun for you too.

What are your thoughts? Is this ridiculous? Let us know on the twitters, instagrams, or facebooks!
